January 28 , 2005

January 28 was a very sad day for me and our farm. My pony Buttons died peacefully on a pretty day, enjoying the green grass. We buried her on my parents’ property where she spent most of her life, near her favorite standing tree.

She had gotten to the point she could hardly walk without heavy doses of pain medication. We were able to give her a pleasant week in the pasture enjoying some particularly nice days. I feel particularly blessed that Max was able to have his first riding experiences on her. We got some nice pictures, and I’m very glad that she was having a good day all the way until the end.

I want to say “Thank you” to my very kind vet Dr. Cindy Backus, all the people who helped take her from our farm to my parents’ house to be buried (Shane, Rob, Dad, Jess, Malissa), and my favorite excavator Lonny for his kind gesture as he buried her. I especially thank my wonderful husband Bob for the seamless arrangements he made because I was too upset to make them. Everything went so smoothly, and Buttons had such a pleasant death and honorable burial. I appreciate the effort that took, more than I can express. Thank you, I love you.

I want to thank my family for the nice things they wrote about Buttons. I was particularly touched by what Jess and Tyler wrote about her. I enjoyed the poem Dad wrote, and I remember the times Mom wrote about. Matt wrote a nice note. I thank Nikki and Taylor for caring so much about my pony.

I will miss you. Thank you for listening, and testing, and drying my tears in your mane.
